HOWIE IN THE HILLS, Fla. -- The Eastern Illinois women's golf squad continued impressive early season play, capturing the team title of the Spring Fling meet held in sunny Florida and hosted by St. John's University at the Par 71, 5,800-yard Mission Inn Resort.
Playing in only the squad's second meet of the spring slate, the Panthers scratched past regional foes IUPUI and Butler for the trophy, as EIU ended up winning by a stroke over the Jaguars and two shots better than the Bulldogs.
Leading all Panthers yet again in this meet were seniors
Jaymie Voorhees and
Katie Imburgia, as both ended up in the Top Five, with Voorhees firing a 164 (82-82/+22) to tie for third, as Imburgia was just a shot shy of her teammate, earning a lone fifth place spot at 165 (85-80/+23).
Three more EIU players finished in the Top 15 as newcomer Emily Calhoun and
Veronica Bernier ended up in eighth and ninth place, followed by a 11th and 15th spot by
Kathryn Koester and
Lauren Williams, who played as an individual, respectively.
Two IUPUI golfers tied for the individual title with a +20 162 stroke total.
After playing in two consecutive two-round meets, Eastern will have nearly two weeks free to prepare for their next meet, playing in the SIU Saluki Invitational on March 27-29 at the Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale, Ill.
