New FCS No. 1, EIU Still Receiving Votes

Panthers open Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois continues to receive votes in both the Sports Network and FCS Coaches Top 25 polls as the Panthers prep to open Ohio Valley Conference play this Saturday against Tennessee Tech. Both polls also welcomed a new number one this week as Georgia Southern was the top school in both polls.

The Panthers (1-1) are coming off a 42-21 loss at Big Ten Conference member Northwestern after a season opening 33-26 victory over Illinois State. EIU is the seventh team receiving votes in the FCS Coaches poll with 18 total points, tied with Bethune-Cookman and Indiana State. The Panthers received seven points in the Sports Network poll.

Georgia Southern collected 102 first place votes in the Sports Network poll and 23-of-28 first place votes in the FCS poll as they improved to 2-0 and took over the No. 1 spot. Former number one and defending national champion Eastern Washington fell to 0-2 on the season, dropping to 10th in both polls.

Northern Iowa moved up to second followed by Appalachian State, Montana State, William & Mary, North Dakota State, Delaware, Wofford and Richmond compiled the remainder of the top ten.

OVC preseason favorite Jacksonville State dropped to No. 16 in the FCS poll and No. 17 in the TSN poll. Montana led off the next set of schools ranked 11th. The Grizzlies were followed by New Hampshire, Stephen F. Austin, James Madison, Southern Illinois, JSU, Chattanooga, Central Arkansas, Lehigh and Liberty in the top twenty.

The final five schools in the poll were South Carolina State, McNeese State, South Dakota, Sacramento State and Massachusetts.
