Freshman defensive end and Florida native Judes Amilcar was shocked when he heard the first news about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010. “No one was expecting it. No one had time to prepare for it,” says Amilcar, who has relatives living in Haiti.

Eastern Illinois is once again the “Cradle of NFL Coaches” as former Eastern Illinois assistant coach and alumnus Mike Shanahan was named the 28th head coach of the Washington Redskins on Wednesday afternoon. Shanahan has a 154 career wins which ranks second among active NFL coaches behind New England’s Bill Belichick.

Eastern Illinois senior Chaz Millard was selected as a third team All-American as the Sports Network released its 2009 FCS All-American team. This was the third time the lineman from St. Charles, Ill., has been honored earning honorable mention honors in 2007 and 2008.

Eastern Illinois ended its 2009 season with a first round NCAA FCS playoff loss at Southern Illinois as the Panthers made their 13th trip to the NCAA FCS playoffs. On Monday EIU finished in the FCS national rankings for the 14th time in school history as the Sports Network and FCS Coaches final rankings were released.

For the second time in four years Eastern Illinois football program has won the Ohio Valley Conference Sportsmanship Award announced on Friday by the league office.  The award is voted on by coaches and student-athletes at the OVC institutions.  EIU previously won the award in 2006.  Also on Thursday EIU head coach Bob Spoo was named one of five finalists for the Liberty Mutual FCS Coach of the Year Award.

Athlete of the Week

Sydney Mitchell is the Student-Athlete of the Week after helping EIU extend its program-record win streak to 11 with victories at SIU Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri State. The freshman provided energy and offensive production off the bench, scoring in double figures in both games. She scored 11 points at SIUE and a career-high 12 points at SEMO. She finished the road trip 7-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
