Track Shuffles Coaching Staff For Season

Eastern Illinois director of track and field Tom Akers has announced the reorganization of several coaching duties on the Panthers staff based on the recent departure of two coaches to pursue other professional opportunities. EIU returns to action this Saturday hosting the Mega Meet at 9 a.m. in Lantz Fieldhouse.

Cross Country Heads To OVC Championships
Eastern Illinois will look to climb back into the top of the Ohio Valley Conference cross country standings as the Panthers travel to the OVC Championships to be held this Saturday at Percy Warner Park in Nashville. EIU was picked second in the men’s OVC preseason poll and fourth in the women’s preseason poll.

In what amounted to a precursor to the Ohio Valley Conference cross country championships, Eastern Illinois had a strong showing on Saturday afternoon as the Panthers finished second and third at the Evansville Invite. The event featured six teams from the OVC with the EIU men placing first among OVC competitors while the women were second.

Cross Country Hosts Productive Alumni Meet
Eastern Illinois held one of its most productive alumni meets in recent years late Saturday afternoon as the Panthers had more than 50 runners compete in the 2009 Walt Crawford Alumni Open. The Panthers will return to action this week at the Lucian Rosa Invite in Kenosha, Wis.

Noted Distance Runner To Speak On Friday
In November, 1969, the Eastern Illinois University Cross Country Team won the NCAA College Division National Championship. Now, forty years later, members of that team will return to the campus for recognition and reunion celebrations on Family Weekend, October 2 and 3rd.

Cross Country 5th At Illinois Intercollegiate
Eastern Illinois placed fifth in both the men's and women's race on Friday evening at the Illinois Intercollegiate hosted by Illinois State University. The women's event was won by the host Redbirds while Illinois captured the men's title.

Illinois Intercollegiate Up Next For EIU
Eastern Illinois will continue its early portion of the 2009 cross country season as they travel to Illinois State to compete in Friday evening’s Illinois Intercollegiate. The event will start at 4:30 p.m. in Normal with teams from 30 different Illinois colleges scheduled to compete.

Athlete of the Week

Sydney Mitchell is the Student-Athlete of the Week after helping EIU extend its program-record win streak to 11 with victories at SIU Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri State. The freshman provided energy and offensive production off the bench, scoring in double figures in both games. She scored 11 points at SIUE and a career-high 12 points at SEMO. She finished the road trip 7-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
