Track Shuffles Coaching Staff For Season

Eastern Illinois director of track and field Tom Akers has announced the reorganization of several coaching duties on the Panthers staff based on the recent departure of two coaches to pursue other professional opportunities. EIU returns to action this Saturday hosting the Mega Meet at 9 a.m. in Lantz Fieldhouse.

Boey Set For Track Outdoor National Meet

Eastern Illinois redshirt freshman sprinter Zye Boey will head to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships beginning Wednesday evening at John McDonnell Field. Boey will compete in the 100m dash as an automatic qualifier into the championships.

Just days after the 2009 IHSA State Track Championships, Eastern Illinois director of track and field Tom Akers has announced the signing of four state qualifiers and one former state champion as the Panthers had four male athletes and one female athlete sign national letters of intent.

Zye Boey of men’s track and Shawana Smith of women’s track were named the Eastern Illinois student-athletes of the month for May 2009. Each month during the school year one male and one female student-athlete are recognized for their outstanding performance in their sport.

Athlete of the Week

Sydney Mitchell

Sydney Mitchell is the Student-Athlete of the Week after helping EIU extend its program-record win streak to 11 with victories at SIU Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri State. The freshman provided energy and offensive production off the bench, scoring in double figures in both games. She scored 11 points at SIUE and a career-high 12 points at SEMO. She finished the road trip 7-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
