Miller Signs Two-Year Contract Extension

Eastern Illinois athletics announced on Monday afternoon that University President Dr. William Perry has awarded a two-year contract extension to head men’s basketball coach Mike Miller. The extension which was voted on by the EIU Board of Trustees in mid-January takes Miller’s contract through the 2011-12 season.

Panthers Draw NIU For Bracketbuster

Eastern Illinois will renew a former rivalry on Feb. 20 as the Panthers have drawn Northern Illinois as their opponent in this year’s ESPNU Bracketbuster game. The contest which will tip at 6 p.m. in Lantz Arena marks the fifth time that EIU has participated in the annual event.

Panthers Fall On The Road JSU, 70-55

Jacksonville State held Eastern Illinois for nearly six minutes at the end of the game as the Gamecocks (10-11, 6-5 OVC) pulled away late for a 70-55 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon. EIU fell to 11-11 on the year, 5-7 in the OVC.

After being limited to 39 percent shooting in the first half Tennessee Tech shot 74 percent in the second half including a late 11-0 run as the Golden Eagles pulled away from Eastern Illinois, 75-65, on Thursday night.

EIU Hits The Road Looking For OVC Wins

Eastern Illinois heads back on the road to start a three game swing through Tennessee Tech, Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri. The Panthers ended a four game OVC slide on Saturday night with a 60-46 win over UT Martin. The win moved EIU back into fifth place in the OVC standings with a 5-5 OVC mark, 11-9 overall.

Laser Sparks Panthers To 60-46 Win Over UTM

Tyler Laser scored 14 straight first half points and finished with a game-high 21 as he helped lead Eastern Illinois to a 60-46 win over UT Martin on Saturday night in Lantz Arena. The win ended a four game losing streak for EIU as they improved to 11-9 overall, 5-5 in the OVC.

100th Year Banquet Tickets On Sale

The public is invited to attend several events as part of the February 26-27 activities celebrating 100 years of men’s basketball at Eastern Illinois University. A 100th EIU Basketball Celebration banquet will be held at 1 pm Saturday, Feb. 27 in the Martin Luther King, Jr. University Union. The cost for the public is $20 per person, regardless of age, and includes a ticket to the Saturday night basketball game vs. Tennessee State which tips off at 6 pm.

Eastern Illinois held Murray State well below its season field goal percentage average for the second time this season but the Panthers (10-9, 4-5 OVC) were also cold themselves at crucial times as Murray State improved to 17-3, 9-0 in the OVC with a 60-51 win over EIU on Thursday night.

Athlete of the Week

Sydney Mitchell

Sydney Mitchell is the Student-Athlete of the Week after helping EIU extend its program-record win streak to 11 with victories at SIU Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri State. The freshman provided energy and offensive production off the bench, scoring in double figures in both games. She scored 11 points at SIUE and a career-high 12 points at SEMO. She finished the road trip 7-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
