Fans around East Central Illinois could be torn on their routing interests on Saturday as one of the regional teams, the Indianapolis Colts, takes on a team in the New Orleans Saints with many ties to Eastern Illinois University. Any way you spin it Super Bowl XLIV (44 for those that do not do Roman numerals), will have implications around the Charleston area.

It all started with a strawberry patch. Those rascally rabbits and deer kept eating the strawberries the Drake family was trying to grow. Someone told them that if a fence was built around the strawberry patch and geese were housed within it, the geese would eat every living thing in the patch but absolutely would not touch the strawberries. Problem was the Drakes didn’t have the money to buy the materials for the fence.

Now in its fourth year of heralding college football coaches who demonstrate sportsmanship, integrity and responsibility on and off the field, Liberty Mutual Insurance today named Eastern Illinois Head Football Coach Bob Spoo one of five Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) finalists for the 2009 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award.

Eastern Illinois athletics will participate in the national NCAA Take A Kid To A Game Day promotion this Thursday, Nov. 19, when the Panthers host Tennessee State on ESPNU with a 5:30 p.m. kickoff at O’Brien Field. Children ages 12-and-under will receive free admission to the game when accompanied by a paying adult. 13th-ranked EIU won a share of the OVC championship on Saturday and can win the title outright with a win on Thursday evening.

Student Athletes of the Week
Athlete of the Week

Sydney Mitchell is the Student-Athlete of the Week after helping EIU extend its program-record win streak to 11 with victories at SIU Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri State. The freshman provided energy and offensive production off the bench, scoring in double figures in both games. She scored 11 points at SIUE and a career-high 12 points at SEMO. She finished the road trip 7-of-13 from the field and 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
