WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eastern Illinois tennis players
Jeff Rutherford and
Jamie Firth finished up action at this past weekend's Purdue Fall Invitational, with Firth advancing to the consolation semifinal in singles, while the duo finished as quarterfinalist in doubles play.
In Flight A Singles, senior
Jeff Rutherford dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Foley from the host Purdue Boilermakers and then dropped a tight 7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-3 match to Perim from Marquette.
Sophomore
Jamie Firth, playing at Flight B Singles, dropped his opening match to Butler's Ervin by a 6-1, 6-0 decision, but rebounded to advance to the consolation semifinals by winning 6-2, 6-2 over Shafer from Butler, before another Bulldog from Butler, downed him 6-4, 6-4. However, Firth also picked up a 6-4, 4-6 10-6 victory over yet another Butler player, McLouglin to finish 2-2 overall.
In doubles action, the twosome teamed up to advance to the quarterfinal round of play with a 9-8 (5) win, but dropped the next match 8-3. But the two then won an 8-1 match over their rivals from Butler to finish 2-1 on the weekend.
The Panthers return to the court on Oct. 15-20, competing in the six-day ITA Midwest Regional being hosted by Michigan in Ann Arbor. The meet will be the final event of the fall season, with 'spring' play officially starting on January 18.
