CHARLESTON, Ill. -- Both the Eastern Illinois men and women golfing squads travel east on I-70 this weekend to compete in the three-day Butler Invitational. Last season at the same meet, the Panther women captured second while the men took home a fifth place finish.
The action gets going with practice rounds on Sunday (Oct. 4) while the official action gets going the following Monday and Tuesday at the Eagle Creek Golf Course, located just outside Indianapolis, Ind.
Back in the fall of 2008, senior
Matt Bird led all Panthers at the same event, tying for second place as the squad took home a fifth place finish, out of the ten schools competing. On the women's side, meanwhile, seniors
Jaymie Voorhees and
Katie Imburgia tied for sixth and ninth place, respectively, as the Eastern unit finished as the runner-up squad out of the ten teams playing.
With six rounds under their belt this fall, the men are currently led by sophomore
Gino Parrodi's 75.8 stroke average. A close second is freshman
David Lawrence with a 76.2 mark, followed by
Kevin Flack's very close 76.3 average off three rounds of play.
After playing four rounds this fall, the women are led by a 79.8 average by
Jaymie Voorhees, while
Katie Imburgia is less than a stroke average behind with a 80.5 average.
Following this weekend play, the Panther men return to action on Oct. 10-12, competing in the Illinois State Invitational, while the Eastern women have one final meet on their autumn slate, taking on several Ohio Valley Conference foes at the Austin Peay Invitational on Oct. 18-20.
