CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois baseball concludes fall practice over the next week with its annual Fall World Series at Coaches Stadium.
Oct. 22 Schedule Update: Due to rain Thursday, the Fall World Series will now be played Friday-Sunday-Tuesday. Friday's game is set for 2:30 p.m., Sunday at 11 a.m. and Tuesday at 3 p.m.
The Fall World Series schedule over the next week calls for games Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The weekday games are slated to begin at 3 p.m. and Sunday's game three is set for 1 p.m. As is always the case in late October, weather could impact the Series schedule.
The Panthers have won an Ohio Valley Conference title each of the last two springs, winning four games in four days vs. four different teams in 2008 to claim the OVC Tournament crown and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Last season, EIU won its fourth OVC regular-season crown since joining the conference in 1997. Eastern was in the discussion for a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament but was left out of the 64-team field after a two-and-out showing at the conference tournament.
The Panthers graduated an eight-player senior class in the spring, headlined by Major League Baseball draftees
Brett Nommensen and
Jordan Kreke. Junior
Tyler Kehrer was also selected in the June draft and signed a professional contract.
Eastern has welcomed back seven players that were regular starters in 2009. Starting pitchers
Josh Mueller and
Mike Recchia, who combined for 16 victories as two-thirds of the 2009 weekend rotation, have also returned for their junior seasons.
However, a number of new players are in the mix this season. Seventeen newcomers are slated to take part in the Fall World Series and as many as 18 could end up making the 2010 roster. The Blue and Gray Teams will also be managed by new assistant coaches James Conrad and Drew Locascio, respectively.
“The last three scrimmages have gone well, but we're still concerned about we're at and how we're playing,” EIU head coach
Jim Schmitz said. “The Fall World Series is another chance to evaluate and make decisions. We put a lot of credence on performing in situations. Hopefully, I'll have a 'this is my team' feeling at the end.
“A lot of things are very similar to the fall of 2007 when he also had a host of new players. In some ways, we're more experienced this year because we have a core of veterans back. But when fall is over I'd really like to be finalized with who we're going with.”
