Panthers Complete ITA Midwest Regional Play

EVANSVILLE, Ill. -- Four sophomores and one junior member of the Eastern Illinois women tennis squad ended play at the prestigious ITA Midwest Regionals this past weekend. Hosted by Northwestern, Shannon Brooks, Amanda Dibbs, Annie EganJuliana Frey, and Cara Huck finished with a combined 3-8 record in singles and 1-4 mark in doubles action.

Brazil native Juliana Frey was lone Panther to earn a win on the first day of action in singles, downing her Bradley opponent in a three-set come-from-behind win (3-6, 6-4, 6-3). However she lost her next match to her Wisconsin foe in straight sets (6-0, 6-1). She finished with a 1-1 overall mark.

In Singles Consolation Allentown, Pa. native Amanda Dibbs picked up a win over a Bradley opponent (4-6, 6-4, 10-6), before losing to her NIU competitor in consecutive sets (6-4, 6-3). She ended with 1-2 singles record.

Also in Consolation play, Aurora native Shannon Brooks and Rochester product Annie Egan each lost but continued to play in the lower bracket of the consolation set-up.

In doubles action, the twosomes of Dibbs & Frey and Brooks & junior Cara Huck each lost in the first round, 8-3 and 8-2, respectively. However, the duo of Brooks and Huck would pick up a close 9-7 victory over their NIU team, before losing their next match.

Overall, the women finished with a 3-8 singles and 1-4 doubles record in the squads' final event of the fall, 2009 season. The Panthers start the official spring campaign on January 14 versus the Mastodons of IPFW.-
