Complete NSCAA Release & Listings
CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois was one of 97 schools nationally to have both of its soccer teams recognized for their academic excellence by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The 2009 Team Academic Award winners were announced by the NSCAA this week, and both EIU programs qualified thanks to team grade point averages above 3.0.
Those 97 schools are not just from NCAA Division I either, as all three NCAA Divisions and NAIA members are included in the total.
EIU women's soccer posted a team GPA of 3.50 during the 2008-09 school year. The Panther men, meanwhile, registered a 3.20 GPA. Both programs raised their team GPAs from the 2007-08 NSCAA report.
The University of Chicago, DePaul, Loyola, Northwestern and Quincy University represent the other Illinois-based schools to accomplish the double honor. Eastern is one of seven NCAA Division I universities in the state to sponsor both men's and women's soccer.
Among the schools that either the EIU men or women played this fall, Butler, Creighton, Drake and Evansville had both of their programs recognized.
