CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois baseball has selected its team captains for the upcoming 2010 campaign and announced the winners of its OVC Challenge, the program's annual offseason fitness event.
“With 16 new players and seven starters, including pitchers, gone from last year's team, the team captains for the 2010 season have a big task ahead of them,” EIU head coach
Jim Schmitz said. “I think the players could not have selected a better group to lead us to another OVC title. Derbak, Foley, and Gee know what it takes to bring about another championship, and Borenstein is the leader of the new group of players. I am very pleased with their leadership so far this fall and know I can count on them this spring.
Derbak also captained his group to the team championship of the OVC Challenge, which features eight tests of strength and endurance over three days.
Ben Thoma claimed the individual OVC Challenge championship and was part of the winning team as well. Although he did not win any of the eight individual events, Thoma posted six Top 10 finishes. His best showings included top three finishes in the gator push (2nd), broad jump (3rd) and tire flips (3rd).
Brad Schweigert and Recchia finished second and third to Thoma in the individual championship point totals. Borenstein also won two events, the broad jump and obstacle course.
“I want to give (assistant coaches) #Skylar [Meade]# and
James [Conrad], along with strength coach Joe Neihaus, credit for making the OVC Challenge such a success this year,” Schmitz said. “I really feel this event is the final team building exercise that really brings us together. I was very impressed with
Ben Thoma for winning the event. Ben is beginning to realize his potential and that it takes hard work to achieve his goals. We have made a conscious effort to get stronger as a team and it is showing in our production. Hopefully it will translate like it did the last few years.”
