CHARLESTON -- Call this a disclaimer, modesty or just realistic fact.
When Marty Pattin throws out a ceremonial first pitch before the 1 p.m. Saturday baseball game for an Eastern Illinois program where he once led the nation in strikeouts, he makes no claim that fans will see the same flame thrower of the 1964 NAIA World Series team.
“You can forget about the heat,” Pattin said.
You can also be sure that Pattin, who turned 66 last week, will not charge after a pop up, collide with his catcher and suffer an injury to the non-throwing shoulder in his senior year keeping him from having even more than the 278 college career strikeouts that still stand as an EIU record.
