CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The Eastern Illinois-Southern Illinois baseball game scheduled for Wednesday evening at Grimes Field in Mattoon has been canceled due to unplayable field conditions caused by steady rain showers Tuesday.

The game will not be rescheduled, nor will it be moved to Coaches Stadium on EIU's campus.

The Panthers are expected to play the University of Illinois at Grimes Field in Mattoon's Peterson Park next year.

Eastern returns to action this weekend for an Ohio Valley Conference showdown series at rival Southeast Missouri. The Panthers and Redhawks will enter the weekend separated by mere percentage points as the top two teams in the conference standings. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
