CHARLESTON, Ill. – A number of Eastern Illinois baseball slated to return for the 2009-10 school year are playing for NCAA-sanctioned wood bat summer leagues from Cape Cod to Texas.

As highlighted earlier this month here at EIUpanthers.com, Josh Mueller is pitching for the Wareham Gatemen of the prestigious Cape Cod League.

Matt Miller and Curt Restko are also a long way from home, playing for the McKinney Marshals of the Texas Collegiate League.

In the Midwest, meanwhile, Richie Derbak (Quincy Gems), Ben Thoma (Quincy Gems) and Cam Strang (Richmond RiverRats) are all playing in the Prospect League. Formerly known as the Central Illinois Collegiate League, the league expanded from four to 12 teams during the winter.

Alex Gee is also playing in Central Illinois with the Gifford-Flatville Gif-Flats of the E.I. League. Former Panthers Tyler Brandon, Tristan Facer, Marcus Jackson and Zach Skidmore are also listed on the roster.

There are also five Panthers playing close to their hometowns in the Chicago Suburban League. Zach Borenstein, Mike Recchia and Gerik Wallsten are with the Lombard Orioles. Mike Martin is pitching for the Melrose Indians and Brad Schweigert is suiting up for the Crestwood Panthers.

Joining the program in the fall after signing a National Letter of Intent in November is Brent McNeil, who is pitching for the Grand Lake Mariners of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League (Ohio). McNeil played for Lincoln Trail Community College in Robinson this past season.

Fellow EIU signee Ryan Dineen helped lead his Andrean High School team to the Indiana Class 3A state championship. Dineen went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple, and was also credited with playing some stellar defense at shortstop in the championship game victory.
