MACOMB, Ill. -- Eastern Illinois women's golf opened the fall portion of the 2009-10 schedule over the weekend, playing in the nine-team Autumn Invitational hosted by Western Illinois.

Junior Veronica Bernier led all Panther golfers with a 15-over-par total of 159.  She actually was in a three-place tie for first place following the first round of action, firing a four-over 76, but ended up falling to a fifth place tie.  Unfortunately, Bernier was one of three additional Panthers playing in the meet, so her rounds of play did not official count in the team totals.

The squad finished in fourth place, with a 659 total, which was 22 strokes from the host Fighting Leathernecks, who won the team trophy.

All-in-all three Eastern players finished in the top 20, with seniors Jaymie Voorhees and Katie Imburgia ending up in seventh and eighth place, respectively, behind a total of 160 and 161.

Juniors Jenna Fox and Sarah Magee ended up tied for 21st and 30th place, while freshman Kathryn Koester finished in 39th place.

Newcomers Emily Calhoun and Lauren Williams also participated as a non-scoring participant, with Calhoun finishing in 25th place and Williams tied for 36.

The Panthers will continue fall ball this coming weekend, competing in the Chicago State Tournament on Sep. 21-22, with a practice round set for the 20th.  Eastern will look to recapture the first place trophy again this year, as they won the seven-team event in 2008.
