PEORIA -- The Eastern Illinois men's tennis squad opened up fall action this past weekend, competing in the six-team Bradley Invitational, as senior Jeff Rutherford won at Flight 1 Singles, while Jamie Firth and Justin Haag teamed up to capture first place in Flight 3 Doubles.

Rutherford won in straight sets over his competition from Bradley, Valparaiso and Saint Louis, but dropped tight 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 match to Nelson of WI-Green Bay.  However, Nelson ended up at 2-2, losing to two opponents that Rutherford downed, thus giving Rutherford the title off his 3-1 weekend record.

At Flight 3 Doubles, Firth and Haag defeated all four opponents they faced on the court, including identical 9-7 wins over their Western Illinois and Bradley opposition.  They easily downed Valparaiso, 8-1, but gutted out a tough 8-6 win over the team from WI-Green Bay.

Haag won two of his Flight 5 Singles matches, while Jamie Firth picked up a win at Flight 3 Singles action.

The Panthers return to the court next weekend, competing in the three-day Ball State Invitational, with first serve set for Friday, Sep. 25 and running thru Sunday.  The EIU women just recently competed at the BSU Invite this past weekend.
