Panthers Dominate Arch-Rival Western Illinois

EIU sweeps WIU; men tops 169-85, women win 166-90

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Both Eastern Illinois swimming squads splashed past visiting Western Illinois on Friday afternoon, with the Panthers winning 169-85 on the men's side and 166-90 for the women.

Over the course of the meet, Eastern won both races ten times, while Western only swept one race, taking both 500-Free events.  The wins helped move the EIU men to 3-2 on the season, while the Panther women improved to 2-3 following their commanding victory.

"This was a really good meet for us on both sides," said second year head coach Matt Bos.  "We have been training very well and are starting to sharpen up in competition which is a really good sign about 30 days away from our Summit League championship meet."

Western, also a member of the Summit League, fell to 1-6 and 1-7 for the men and women, respectively.

"Our lineup for the league meet is also strarting to become a little clearer," said Bos.  "We are going to keep working hard and hopefully we keep getting better."

Both Eastern squads swept their respective relays, with Rich Waszak, Joe Ciliak, Cody Showers, and John Wilson touching first in the 200-Medley, while Laura Nilsen, Kelli Dicanio, Kellie Logterman, and Tyler Crittenden won the event in 1:51.60.

In the 400-Free Relay, the foursome of Tyler Crittenden, Alyssa Lehman, Molly Nordyke and Lauren Zillmer won in 3:44.28, as Ken Tiltges, Cody Showers, Joe Ciliak, and John Wilson beat out all squads with a time of 3:15.72.

Individually, the men were led by John Wilson and Mike Lacine, with each taking two individual events.  Wilson came in first in both the 50-Free (21.94) and 100-Free (48.27), while Lacine touched the wall first in the 100-Back (54.52) and 200-IM (2:00.24).

Three Panthers set new personal bests in their first place finishes, including Joe Ciliak in the 100-Breast (59.32), Nathan Moritz in the 200-Fly (1:58.81), and Cody Showers in the 100-Fly (53.75).

Other EIU men taking first were Tyler Hsieh in the 200-Free (1:46.67), Rich Waszak in his 200-Back (1:58.01) race, and Matt Scaliatine first in the 200-Breast (2:11.79) event.

The women had nine first place individual wins, as senior Lauren Zillmer led all Panthers, winning her 200-Free (1:57.80) race, while also setting new season bests in both her 50-Free (24.80) and 100-Free (53.74) wins.  

Kelli Dicanio won two events, including the 100-Breast (1:08.38) and topped her seed time behind her win in the 200-Breast (2:26.29).  Laura Nilsen won two events of her own, including touching first in the 100-Back (59.57) and 200-IM (2:11.63).

Alyssa Lehman set a new season best in her 200-Back (2:10.28) victory as well, while Hailey Foss took first in the 1000-Free (10:50.43).

Both Panther squads return to the water tomorrow afternoon, hosting another instate foe, as the Big Blue of Millikin come to town for a 1 pm dual meet.
