INDIANAPOLIS -- Following first day action of the Summit League Championships, the Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming squads set three new school marks to currently sit in third and fourth place, respectively.
Day one action, being held at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI, included prelims and finals in the 200-Free Relay, 500-Free, 200-IM, 50-Free, and 400-Medley Relay.
EIU freshman
Ken Tiltges made an immediate splash, recording a new school mark in his 200-IM prelim swim, via a time of 1:52.94. Tiltges would eventually place fourth in the final race. The previous best Panther time was 1:53.38 set in 2008.
Senior
Laura Nilsen etched a new EIU best time in her opening 100-Back leg of the 400-Medley, topping her own school record mark of 59.04 with a new best time of 58.89.
Meanwhile, the 400-Medley foursome of Nilsen (back), freshman
Kelli Dicanio (breast), and seniors
Kellie Logterman (butterfly), and
Lauren Zillmer (freestyle) topped the previous school mark of 3:57.18, recorded at last season's league meet, with their new third place time of 3:55.48.
Besides the Panthers, who compete as an associate member of the Summit league, other teams competing include Centenary, IUPUI, South Dakota, South Dakota State, and Western Illinois, with perennial favorite Oakland enjoying the early lead on both the men's and women's team standings. However, the EIU men currently sit just 42 points away from the leaders.
More individual top three scorers for Eastern included newcomer
John Wilson, who shocked all competitors by touching first in the 50-Free sprint with a new personal best time of 20.75. Fellow freshman
Mike Lacine, meanwhile, placed second in his 200-IM race, in 1:53.40.
Other top three EIU finishers of note included the 200-Free Relay team of Tiltges, freshmen
John Wilson, sophomore
Tyler Hsieh, and freshman
Colin McGill placing second, while the foursome of Zillmer, freshman
Molly Nordyke, Logterman, and sophomore
Tyler Crittenden placed third in the same relay on the women's side.
Both Panther squads get back into the pool on Friday for day two action.
