March 12, 1988 - Eastern Illinois women's basketball picked up an 80-79 win against rival Illinois State as the Panthers won the Gateway Conference Tournament Championship in Bloomington, Ill. Barb Perkes scored 20 of her 29 points in the second half including a steal and lay-up with 11 seconds remaining that proved to be the game winner. With the win EIU would earn the Panthers first post-season appearance as an NCAA Division I school with EIU playing host to Colorado in Lantz Arena for a first round contest.

EIU would finish the season at 22-8, 14-4 in the Gateway Conference following the 78-72 loss to Colorado. The team was led by the starting five of senior Anne Brown, juniors Lisa Tyler and Sheryl Bonsett and sophomores Barb Perkes and Laura Mull.
