November 10, 1984 - Finishing off his first season as the full-time starter at quarterback Sean Payton ended the 1984 season with one of the best performances of his collegiate career. The sophomore connected on 22 of 36 passes for 461 yards which ranked second on the single game list at the time. Payton would connect for five touchdown passes which matched the school record.

The Panthers would win the contest 50-19 over Western Kentucky to post a 6-5 record for the season under head coach Al Molde. The passing effort would help Payton set the EIU school single season record for passing yards at 3,843 while he ended the year with 28 touchdown tosses a school record later broken by Tony Romo. Earlier in the 1984 season Payton had set the single game passing record with 486 yards against Southwest Missouri. During his junior season Payton would pass for 509 yards against Saginaw Valley, a record that stands to this day at EIU.
