CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois women's soccer hits the road for Labor Day Weekend looking to rebound from a pair of shutout losses, squaring off against Green Bay Friday evening and Indiana State Sunday afternoon.
Friday's 7 p.m. kickoff in Green Bay (1-1-1) represents the second of the Panthers' four night games on the regular-season schedule. Sunday, EIU (2-2) returns to Memorial Stadium on the east side of Terre Haute for a noon kickoff with ISU (2-2).
Eastern has not played at Green Bay since the 1998 season opener. The program's last game in the state of Wisconsin was in 1999 at a four-team tournament hosted by the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Meanwhile, the Panthers and Sycamores have played every year since ISU added women's soccer in 2000. This will be the first meeting at Memorial Stadium, where Indiana State began playing its home games last year. Memorial Stadium was also the site of last year's EIU-UT Martin game, which was moved to Terre Haute due to unfavorable field conditions at Lakeside Field. Eastern has not won in Terre Haute since 2006.
The Panthers played both Green Bay and ISU to draws in Charleston last year, salvaging stalemates with equalizers after trailing in both games.
Danielle Flynn setup
Ashley Streid's game-tying goal in the 62nd minute against Green Bay, while
Kaitlin Sullivan and
Kristin Germann assisted on
Alexis Miller's 34th-minute equalizer in the home opener versus Indiana State.
Kaylin Lorbert was EIU's starting goalkeeper in both games a year ago. She made a season-high 10 saves in the draw with the Sycamores, the most recent of her three career double-figure save efforts. Lorbert also had seven saves on a rainy afternoon in the draw with Green Bay.
Hillary Blake chipped in a team save as well not long before the Phoenix scored their first goal to tie the score. The 2-2 draw with Green Bay marked the only time in Lorbert's last eight starts that she has surrendered multiple goals.
Green Bay had its season opener with Wisconsin postponed due to inclement weather and poor field conditions in northeast Wisconsin. The Phoenix played Drake to a scoreless draw Aug. 22 and split their road trip through North Dakota last weekend, surrendering only one goal in their first three games.
Eastern has also been very stingy defensively early this season. The two goals allowed through the first four games represent the fewest in program history.
Indiana State is idle Friday after a successful weekend in which it posted shutout wins against in-state rivals Butler and IPFW. The Sycamores lost an exhibition game at EIU's Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State last month and dropped both games of its home-and-away, season-opening weekend vs. Western Michigan and at Ball State.
Coincidentally, EIU and ISU play the same opponents next weekend. Belmont and UMKC visit both Charleston and Terre Haute on their Sept. 10-12 weekend road trips.
Indiana State goalkeeper Emily Lahay has surrendered only one goal in 315 minutes this season. She took over in net to start the second half of the WMU game and has remained the starter.
Green Bay was picked sixth (of nine) in the Horizon League preseason poll, while ISU was tabbed fifth (of seven) in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll.
