RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Illinois women's cross country team placed five runners on the All-Ohio Valley Conference squad as the Panthers won the OVC Championship on Saturday at Eastern Kentucky. The Panther men placed second in the conference meet.
The championship victory was the second for the EIU women's program with the previous one coming in 2001. EIU head coach
Erin Howarth was named the OVC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year as EIU finished with 41 points. Defending champion EKU was second with 57 points followed by Southeast Missouri with 88 and Jacksonville State with 103.
Erika Ramos led the women's squad placing fourth with a time of 18:18.72. Ramos was one of three EIU runners to earn first team All-OVC honors.
Olivia Klaus was fifth at 18:25.83 and
Caitlin Napoleoni was seventh with a time of 18:35.02.
Britney Whitehead and Gabriela Duenas both earned second team All-OVC honors to mark the second straight year that EIU has placed five runners on the All-Conference squad. Whitehead was 11th with a time of 18:41.99 while Duenas crossed in 14th in 18:44.44.
Megan Gingerich was 15th at 18:48.81,
Emily Pedziwiatr was 27th at 19:20.49 and
Chelsea Sondgeroth was 40th at 19:52.86 to round out the EIU competitors.
On the men's side the EIU men placed four runners on the All-OVC squad as they finished second with 62 points. EKU won the title with 18 points while Southeast Missouri was third with 65 points. Morehead State placed fourth with 149 points.
Bradley LaRocque earned first team All-OVC honors for the second straight year placing seventh with a time of 25.44.93.
Bryce Basting,
Matt Feldhake and
Danny Delaney earned second team honors at the meet. Basting was 11th at 26:11.35, Feldhake was 13th at 26:15.35 and Delaney was 14th at 26:21.13.
Graham Morris crossed in 18th place at 26:41.83 followed by
Jordan Jones in 21st at 26:49.58, Bill Roth in 27th at 27:06.09 and
Ryan Ballard in 31st at 27:17.22.
EIU will return to action in two weeks at the Midwest Regional.
