CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois outfielder
Zach Borenstein was selected by the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday evening in day two of Major League Baseball's First-Year Players Draft. Borenstein was taken as the 705th overall pick in the 23rd round.
Borenstein becomes the fifth Panther selected in the MLB Draft in the last three years and 16th player drafted under the tutelage of EIU head coach
Jim Schmitz.
The Buffalo Grove, Ill., native paced the EIU offense this season as he posted a team-best .349 batting average, 68 hits and 38 runs. He also had 29 RBIs, 13 doubles, seven home runs and nine stolen bases on the year.
During Ohio Valley Conference action, Borenstein batted .400 with nine doubles and 23 runs. He also posted a .738 slugging percentage and a .468 on base percentage in those contests.
If the junior elects to sign with the Angels, he would become the second active Panther playing with the Los Angeles organization. Tyler Kehrer was drafted by the Angels in 2009 and currently plays for the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Low A – Midwest League).
