Rough Match Ends In Scoreless Draw For EIU

EIU and IUPUI open Summit League play with 0-0 tie

Eastern Illinois opened up Summit League play as a new member ending a very rough match with a 0-0 draw with IUPUI on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.  The tie left EIU's record on the season at 4-4-1, 0-0-1 in the Summit.

EIU had a great scoring chance in the 22nd minute as Mike Picinich's blast was punched away by IUPUI goalkeeper Tyler Keever and hit the cross bar. Keever would make six total saves in goal. EIU's starting goalkeeper Evan Turner was also up to the task as he made four saves.

EIU had two other good scoring chances as Keever stopped Alex Koch's header from in close in the 59th minute and a low shot by Zach Piekarski in the first minute of overtime that Keever was able to stop.

IUPUI's best scoring chance came off the foot of Tyler Fritcha as Turner made a save on a Fritcha shot on goal in final minute of the second overtime. Turner had stopped a close range scoring shot by Matt Guy in the 34th minute.

The game was rough throughout with a total of 42 fouls being called on the two teams including eight yellow cards and a red card to the Panthers Graham Lynch in the final three minutes of overtime.

Picinich had four shots for EIU while Fritcha had four shots for IUPUI. IUPUI moved to 1-6-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in the Summit League.

The Panthers return to action on Friday at Western Illinois.
