NEW YORK – Thirty of the top prospects in the 2014 NFL Draft were invited to Radio City Music Hall. After Thursday night's first round nine of those prospects were set to return on Friday evening for the second and third rounds of the draft.
Included in that group is Eastern Illinois quarterback
Jimmy Garoppolo who has been slated by many mock drafts as an early second round selection.
The draft will resume at 7 p.m. (Eastern). Garoppolo was attempting to become only the fifth Ohio Valley Conference player to ever be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft and the first FCS player to be selected in the first round since Tennessee State's Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was taken 16th in the 2008 draft.
Eastern Illinois highest draft pick in school history is Chris Watson when he was taken by the Denver Broncos in the third round of the 1999 draft. EIU's last NFL Draft selection was Otis Hudson selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by Cincinnati. The Panthers have had 11 players drafted all-time by the NFL.
The four previous OVC first round draft picks were Wally Chambers (Eastern Kentucky / 1973 / No. 8 by Chicago), Phil Simms (Morehead State / 1979 / No. 7 by New York Giants), Aaron Jones (Eastern Kentucky / 1988 / 18th by Pittsburgh) and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Tennessee State / 2008 / 16th by Arizona). Tennessee State has had several first round picks but not as a member of the OVC.
EIU's
Erik Lora is considered a possible late round selection on Saturday. Three quarterbacks were selected in the first round on Thursday night – Blake Bortles, Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater with the final pick of the evening.
Garoppolo did take part in the red carpet walk prior to the draft with his mother Denise.
