2013-14 Men's Swimming Roster
Biography
2013-14 ... Earned All-Summit League honors for the third time in his Panther career... as he placed third in the 100-Back finals at the end-of-season league meet with a new school-record time... also saw action in three freestyle events as well as several relay events... represented all Panthers at the Winter National Time Trials as he comopeted in the 100-Free event.
2012-13 ... Named All-Summit League honoree in three relays and also in individual action ... opening leg of the new school-record 200-Medley Relay... plus the 200 and 400-Free Relays... and placed third in the 100-Back event, while also setting a new school-record time of 49.91 in the prelims... improved his two previous EIU Top 10 performances in both the 50 and 100-Free events as each now rank as the third fastest finishes in school history.
2011-12 ... As a junior, he saw action in both the 50 and 100-Free, setting season-best times in dual meets against IUPUI and Butler, respectively... an early season injury would force him to utilize a redshirt season, however.
2010-11 ... Earned Summit-League honors as he set a new personal best time in the 100-Back to move into third place in the EIU record book… also notched a 6th best EIU time in the 100-Free… also continued to swim in the 50 Free and Back events… anchor leg of the top 200-Medley Relay unit.
2009-10 ... As a true freshman he saw significant action which included swimming in three relay squads… swam the opening leg of the 200-Medley squad and anchor leg of the 200-Free foursome, both of which set new schools marks… individually he notched third-best EIU times in the 100-Back and fifth fastest finish in the 50-Free… also saw action in the 100 and 200-Free, 50 and 200-Back, and 100-Fly.
HIGH SCHOOL ... While at Champaign Central HS he was a member of the football, track and swimming squads... earning four letters on the swim team... coached by both matt Hopkins and Will Barker... elected team captain his senior year... two-time team ‘Hardest Worker’ award winner, while being tabbed ‘Outstanding Sophomore’... earned the Jeff Triger Leadership Award his senior year and the scholarship that goes with it... ‘Most Athletic’ runner-up in senior year... nine-time IHSA state qualifier and six-time Sectional Champion... Central earned three Sectional Championships during his swimming career... four-time Academic letterwinner and four-time Athletic Academic Honor Roll... member of the Champaign Heat swim club... number one personal highlight was “swimming with my brother in high school and setting the pool record my senior year... and also any time I swam at state”... credits his brothers and coaches for “helping me stay motivated and to improve as much as possible.”
PERSONAL ... Majoring in sociology with a minor in criminology... son of Jeff & Susan McGill… younger brother of current head coach Elliott McGill… while another brother, Tyler, was a former Auburn standout swimmer before becoming a current member of the USA national men’s team.
OUT OF THE WATER WITH COLIN ... Chose EIU "because of the swim team and the sociology department"... would love to have a shot at playing golf on the PGA tour... currently driving a Ford Ranger... also enjoys fishing, going to movies and having a good time... favorite t.v. show is Game of Thrones... family owns a Chocolate Lab/Retriever mix named 'Zoey'... since coming to EIU he has learned "how to balance my life"... his advice to a younger swimmer is -- "if you are not 100% committed to working hard, you're wasting your time"... his favorite quote comes via his brother, Tyler -- "control what you can."
